The Breedekloof Wine Route was established in 2002 and consists of 15 wineries ranging from small boutique cellars to estates and larger co-operatives.
In 2014 a group of winemakers from the Breedekloof decided to band together and collectively showcase South Africa’s greatest white grape; Chenin Blanc, and so the Breedekloof Makers Initiative began. What started out as a dream, has since established firm roots with a collection of individual Chenin Blancs that perfectly illustrate the quality of the Breedekloof terroir.
The majority of the estates in the Breedekloof are family-owned. Generations have grown up together, farmed together, made wine together. This is the bedrock on which the Breedekloof is rooted.

To be part of the Breedekloof Makers, a winery must produce one premium Chenin Blanc, known as "The Expected". This Chenin Blanc is normally made from grapes from single vineyards or old vines, fermented in barrels, amphora clay pots or cement eggs.
